Anne Apuzzo, a long-time resident of Uniondale, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on January 17. 2020, two months after her 99th birthday. She suffered from progressive dementia over the past several years. She is survived by her husband of 76 years, Alphonsus, her brother Ralph Capasso, her children, Christine and Keith, and their spouses, Jay and Carmen, and her beloved grandchildren, Emily, Jamie, and Sam.
Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne was the daughter of Johnny and Amelia Capasso. She went to work after high school to help support her family during the great depression.
She married her childhood sweetheart on a weekend pass before he left to serve in World War II. While her husband was serving in World War II, Anne continued to work, while also volunteering in a military hospital.
After the war, Anne and Al brought two children into the world, and they moved to Uniondale, where they would live for 65 years. Anne worked at Uniondale High School and eventually was in charge of the duplicating department.
Her kind, non-judgmental personality and her willingness to help others made her a favorite of friends and coworkers. Her unconditional love and support for family made her the greatest daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother that anyone could ask for.
A devout Catholic, she taught by example not words, accepting all for who they were, not by what they had. She was always willing to lend a hand or listen.
From her warm personality to Sunday morning waffles, Friday mac & cheese, her famous chocolate birthday cake, and everything in between, she will remain a strong fixture in our family, always in our hearts and minds.
