Curlan, mom, daughter, baby sister, and Redbone were the few names she liked to be called. Born on a hot day in San Fernando general hospital on Saturday, October 25th, 1975 at 6:00 pm with a nurse named Curl on her side. She was the youngest daughter of McFarlane and Maltina Lewis. The youngest sister to Lawrence, Winston, Ann, Shem, Don, Clem, Dianne, Tony, Adrian, Shawn, and Mark. She was the youngest and most of the time cool aunt to her 29 nieces and nephews. She was the spark to all her cousins and friends. Most importantly she was a loving and protective mother to her only child Christiana. Curlan was the spoiled child she would ask Grandpa to take her to KFC after she faked crying for him. She would call her mom asking for her favorite foods and she would get it no matter what. Rain or shine she would be given what she wanted. If it was a new bike from Winston after she broke one, Don taking her to and from school and doctor appointments since she was young, always asking Tony for soup or pepper shrimp, taking little shopping sprees to Macy’s with grandma and Ann, going to chuck e. cheese with her nephews and nieces, Throwing the best parties after not asking but telling everyone what to bring. Her Pfizer and Sino pharm phone calls with Adri. She joked with Dianne for hours laughing on the phone, spending weekends at Clem’s enjoying laughs, food, and a good time, she enjoyed bake and hot sauce from Shem and remembered her Dasheen bush baths with Mark so they can laugh about it in their 40’s. My mom was courageous, beautiful, kindhearted, difficult to understand at times, and most importantly a fighter. She loved me with all she had and always gave me the best she could. I love my mom with my life, and I’ll live on being a reminder of her. There are many ways to explain how life comes and goes but with hers, she was the last to come and the first to leave. I’ll share this One memory shared by Shem where he remembered taking Curlan for a ride on a Ferris wheel as a child, excited to step on the ride but as the ride proceeded, you could have heard the loudest scream and shout "Get me off”, ......get me off. Eventually, the ride ended, and she was the happiest person to just get off. It was a happy time when God blessed our family with Curlan but as the ride of life progressed there were moments of screaming (sickness, broken relationships, disappointment,) and warning to get off. But the ride of life stopped like that Ferris wheel with a smile on May 27th, 2023 at 3:32 am. I know her soul is in a better, happier, and safer place. I’ll end this with her favorite psalm.
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod, and your staff,
they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
you anoint my head with oil.
my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
