Delmira A. McFarlane

 (Sunrise 12/9/1932- Sunset 7/14/2025) Delmira A. McFarlane peacefully went to her eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on July 14, 2025, at 1:14pm. A much-loved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, surrogate mom and grandmother, mentor and friend, she is reunited with her beloved late husband, Noel C. McFarlane; her loving parents and siblings, Francisco and Leona Gomez and Laura, Felipe and Fernando; her dear godparents, Percevil Walcott and Catherine Slack; and her extended family, Stanley, Marion, Lloyd, Owen and Beryl McKenzie. Delmira was born in Colón, Panama on December 9, 1932, and raised in the joy to know Christ as her savior. She was an extrovert and a curious child who enjoyed reading, learning, playing piano, dancing and having a good laugh. Delmira was deeply loved by her parents, Francisco and Leona Gomez, and her godparents, Percevil Walcott and Catherine Slack. It was the latter (Aunt Katie) who accompanied Delmira to Jamaica, West Indies in 1945, affording her the opportunity to attend the prestigious Montego Bay High School and the University College Hospital of the West Indies, in addition to beginning her nursing career at Morant Bay Hospital. During these years, Delmira formed a sisterhood with Beryl McKenzie, a close friend, whose parents (Stanley and Marion) embraced and invited her to live with their family. It was in their care and supervision that she would meet and marry Beryl’s cousin, Noel C. McFarlane, in 1956, and eventually welcome four children: Robert, Maria, Courtenay and Nicolle. In the 1960s, Delmira moved with her husband and family to the United States, living in Queens, NY and Virginia before ultimately returning to NY to settle in Uniondale, Long Island. There, she found fellowship at the First Baptist Church of Hempstead, where ‘Mrs. Mac’ remained part of the church community for over 30 years. In Uniondale, Delmira also became reacquainted with a childhood friend from Panama, Cecilia Lawson. Their close 20-year friendship endured to Cecilia’s children, who affectionately called her ‘Mama Del’ and shared her with their own children and friends. Through her involvement in her church and with the youth in her community and care, Mama Del was well-known for her wisdom and sense of humor, her cooking and dancing, her counsel, jokes and sharing of many stories. She was a graciously generous woman with a young-at-heart quality and zest for life, gifting those who crossed her path with warmth, compassion and kindness. Mama Del will be remembered for her sincere, unwavering commitment and love of Christ, and blessing those around her with abundant, unconditional love. Delmira is survived by her children, Robert, Maria, Nicolle, Courtenay and his wife, Norma, and the extended McFarlane family; her brother and sister, Cleto and Elvira Gomez, and the extended Gomez family. She will be missed by her extended family: Sonia, Inez, Raymond and Colette McKenzie; Dorothy and George Lee and family; Carol, Andre, Christian, and Bryan Etienne; Mateo Young; Carlos Miller, Raul and Mateo Lawson; her god daughters, Annie O’Loughlin and Cecilia Etienne; as well as many loving cousins, nieces and nephews in California, Canada, Florida, Georgia, New York, Jamaica, the Bahamas and her beloved Panama.
