Eugene Ianthe Payne-Cain 1926-2024 Today we celebrate the life of our beloved family member, Eugene, who passed on Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at the age of 97. Eugene was born in Martin’s Bay, St. John on November 24th, 1926, on the island of Barbados. She was married to Egbert Cain and they were blessed with two children, Joan and Darnley. Eugene immigrated to the United States in 1965 to provide a better life for her children and grandchildren. She attended the school of nursing and started her career at Marcus Garvey Nursing Home in Brooklyn, until she retired in 1996. Eugene, affectionately called Mommie, was a kind and loving person who enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and gathering with friends and family. She was the matriarch of our family. Holidays at her home, the gathering place, were always a feast to behold, from her coconut drops with the red cherry in the middle to her famous fruit cakes and carrot cakes, which she lovingly prepared. Mommie believed in Jehovah, which was exemplified in the way she lived her life, cared for her family and anyone who crossed her path. Her favorite sentiment was always, “Much to be grateful for!” and yes, we are indeed blessed and grateful to have had her in our lives.
