Hubert Jackson Obituary

Hubert E. Jackson

Sunrise May 27, 1950 -  Sunset July 10, 2020

Hubert Edward (Eddie) Jackson was the first child born to the late Hubert Jackson II and Zenia (Jackson) Whittaker. He was born on May 27, 1950, in the historic Longwood section of the Bronx. As a young child, he moved with his family to the Edenwald Houses in the Northeast Bronx. Along with his younger brother Wayne, and his neighborhood friends, they discovered the Sousa woods, played basketball in the park, and explored Freedom Land. Eddie was baptized under the leadership of Rev. Miner at the United Christian Baptist Church and he sang in the church choir.

Eddie attended NYC public schools and graduated from Evander Childs High School. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted and served in the US Airforce stationed in Hawaii. On August 29, 1970, Eddie married his childhood friend Audrey Ferguson from this union; they became proud parents to Ericka Christine. After discharge from the Air Force, he began a career as a Mail Carrier with the USPS. The union between Eddie and Audrey did not last but the friendship remained, and they shared two wonderful grandchildren, Marquise and Natalia.

Hubert Jackson was a Noble in good standing of Temple Makkah #5 of the Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He loved traveling, country living, and fishing. He even strummed the guitar for a time. Eddie’s favorite pastime was music and loved listening to the Motown Sound.  A passion that was formed at a young age with his Uncle Alfred and his late brother, Wayne. They each had their favorite performer and would spend hours practicing the songs and dance routines.  Eddie was a HUGE FAN of Smokey Robinson...down to the Jheri Curl and open-collared shirt...you could not tell him anything. He used to call himself Smokey. Once when he had orchestra seats, Smokey invited him to the stage to get on the mic and sing along.

On June 25, 1988, Eddie married the lovely Roberta (Tanya) Heyward of the Bronx. Together they enjoyed family functions, concerts, and travel. This union was blessed with two beautiful girls, Kharisma Ilene and Kylea Winifred, the pride and joy of their lives. Eventually, they left the Bronx to reside in Long Island. They developed community and fellowship with South Hempstead Baptist Church, where Eddie served first as an Usher then as a Trustee. He retired from the Postal Service in 2006. With his new spare time, he recaptured his youth by watching reruns of his favorite sitcoms and westerns. He talked politics with his mother, vacationed with his family and, enjoyed watching countless sporting events. Eddie also worked part-time as the Cafeteria Monitor at Turtle Hook Middle School.

Despite Eddie’s health struggles which developed in the last quarter of his life; he was thankful he was able to see each of his three girls graduate from college and begin successful careers. On the dawn of Friday, July 10, 2020, Eddie crossed over to join those who went before him, including his wife of 32-years, Tanya, who died on April 23, 2020. Left to honor his memory are daughters, Ericka Jackson-Vaught (son-in-law Gary) Kharisma and Kylea Jackson; grandchildren, Marquise and Natalia Vaught; sisters, Darlene and Raquel Whittaker; two special nieces Zena Jackson-Barkley (Omar) and Lynise Blake; great-nephew Kameron Barkley; uncles Caleb Williams (Cynthia) and Alfred Williams (Deborah); aunt Elnaurice Williams; sisters-in-law Jennie D. Heyward, Ewana C. Cardoza (Horace); brothers-in-law Robert W. Heyward and Tracy W. Heyward as well as several godchildren; a host of wonderful cousins; and many friends.
