James Murphy Obituary

James J. Murphy, age 56, passed away suddenly on October 17, 2024, at Columbia Hospital in New York City. Jim was born in Rockville Center, NY to James C. and Ann-Marie Murphy on September 13, 1968.

He attended school in Commack, NY and Old Saybrook, CT. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. He was employed by Coca Cola Company in White Plains, NY, as a graphic designer.

Jim had a great smile and brought joy to everyone he met. When Jim was young, he loved to draw and build bridges from his father’s scrap wood. He became a master at origami which he often used to amuse adults with his creations. At age 10 he filled a tabletop Christmas tree full of origami decorations. Jim loved music. He played saxophone in his high school band. In college he switched to playing tuba and played in the marching band at the UConn football games. After graduation, Jim competed in professional marching bands and did choreography for his and other bands.

Jim and Ana met in Norwalk, CT in 2007 and were married in 2008. During their first years together, Jim introduced his family traditions and backgrounds to Ana and her son, Robert. They started living together in harmony following a mixed of family traditions. Jim’s favorite holidays were Easter, 4 of July, Thanksgiving day and Christmas where he used to decorate with a creative mind and details based on his experience growing up. Later on, Jim would show his 2 granddaughters, Bella (7) and Lyla (2), how to bring the spirit of each holiday through decorations.

Jim was an excellent cook. He always grabbed his cooking book and made sure to create perfect conditions to grill food. Jim’s passions for food, golf, sports and strong attention to details made him an unique and loving human being who will be remembered everyday by keeping his legacy, to bless others through the spirit of family traditions to make memories last forever.

Jim is survived by his wife, Ana Murphy, his father James C. Murphy and wife, Caren, a sister Erin Smith and brother-in-law Brad, a stepson Robert Vargas and wife Carolina, and granddaughters, Bela and Lyla.
