Jean Roland Payen was born on December 17, 1957, in Jacmel, Haiti, to
Marcel and Genevieve Dure Payen. On October 1, 2026, at the age of 68, the
Lord called him home to rest.
In February 1977, at the age of nineteen, Jean left Jacmel and came to New
York to build a new life, carrying the warmth and spirit of home with him.
After working a few delivery jobs, Jean found his place behind the wheel of
a taxi. He drove the streets of New York for many years and took pride in
his honest work, until his health no longer allowed him to work in 2012.
Jean loved music, he loved to cook, and he believed life was meant to be
enjoyed. Time spent with him often came with good food, good music and
good company. His presence will be deeply missed, but his joy lives on in
every life he touched.
Above all, Jean loved his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving
wife, Evelyne Querette Payen; his children, Tatiana, Doreen, Dominique and
Kervens; and a host of relatives and friends.
