Maureen Hand Obituary

Maureen (Hyland) Hand, 88, died peacefully in Long Beach, NY Monday, May 25, 2020.    She was born in Jersey City, NJ on August 28, 1931 to James and Helen Hyland.  She grew up in Queens Village and attended Our Lady of Lourdes and Jamaica High School. She had a deep love for her sisters, Regina, Helen, Bernice and Patrice and brother, James Jr. As a child she was proud of her “victory garden” that she cultivated in support of our country’s efforts during World War II.   She had a close relationship with her cousin Vincent Hyland who died in Europe during the War.  Growing up she enjoyed playing basketball and playing pranks on her siblings, especially her brother.  As her brother Jim described her, Maureen was a “unique blend of humor, gentle crazy, courage and faith”.

Maureen enjoyed her job at Macy’s while also volunteering for Birthright as part of her effort to support the rights of the unborn.  She was also a Eucharistic minister at St Martha’s Church in Uniondale, NY and spearheaded an active prayer group community at that parish.  She enjoyed several years of residence in Coconut Creek, Florida with her siblings and their spouses.

She met her husband, Harry Hand Jr., while working at Household Finance and married him on May 19, 1951.  They started their family in Levittown, NY and then moved to Uniondale so their children could attend Catholic school.  Maureen is survived by their six children, Colleen (Hand) Wolters and her husband Gary, Susan (Hand) Manley and her husband Michael, Harry Hand and his wife, Nancy, Michael Hand and his wife Dawn, Nancy (Hand) Huber and her husband Alan (Jay) and Patrick Hand and his wife Maria.  In addition, Maureen leaves behind her treasured grandchildren: Sean, Kevin, Brendan, Caitlin, Meaghan, Charlotte, Patrick, Matthew, Brittany, Ryan, Christopher, Ryan, Brendan, Emily, and Patrick; and great-grandchildren Mikayla, Aiden, Madyson, Scarlett, Jackson, Logan, Lucas and Baby Eva.

Services will be held privately at Hartnett Funeral Home followed by a funeral Mass and burial at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Maureen’s memory can be sent to Good Counsel Homes, 600 Meadowlands Parkway, Suite 241, Secaucus, NJ 07094, Attention Chris Bell or online at Goodcounselhomes.org.

A memorial Mass will be held at a later date to be announced.
