Nicolas Lanier Obituary

Nicolas Jean Lanier (1946–2025) Nicolas Jean Lanier, a beloved father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, passed away on December 18, 2025, at the age of 79. He transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by love, with his caring and devoted daughter, Utepsie, by his side. Born on December 2, 1946, in Anse-à-Foleur, Haiti, Nicolas Jean—known affectionately as Jean—was the son of André Lanier and Irene Dampaire, and the grandson of Dr. Clément Joseph Lanier. He spent much of his childhood and youth in St. Marc, where he attended Lycée Sténio Vincent. From a young age, Jean possessed a spirit of curiosity and adventure. At just 16 years old, he traveled to the Congo with his uncle and godfather, Urbain Lanier. After two formative years abroad, he returned to Haiti and later settled in Port-au-Prince, where he continued to shape his life, relationships, and legacy. Jean was a man deeply rooted in family. He is survived by his former wife, Carole, and his children: Utepsie Lanier, Joseph Clément Lanier, and Vicky Lanier. He was a proud grandfather to Jayson Fernandez and Gabriella Fernandez, who brought him immense joy. Jean was also a loving father figure to Dukens Micheal and Kevin Pierre-Louis, whom he embraced as his own and supported with care. Friends and family will remember Jean for his generosity, kindness, and great sense of humor. He was passionate about soccer and was never one to shy away from lively, thoughtful discussions about politics—conversations that reflected his curiosity and engagement with the world around him. He will be deeply missed by his siblings: Marie-Victorine Lanier Saget (Pierre); Henri Lanier; Patrice Lanier; Marie Carline Lanier; Marie-Paule Lanier; and Marie-Andrée Lanier. Jean also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews— Manushka, Sydney, Amanda, Lukhas as well as Fritz Gérald, Gerry, and David (Vanessa), Andy, Marc and Karlensky—along with extended family members, dear friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his journey. Jean will be remembered for his enduring love for family, his courage, and the gentle strength with which he faced life. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him, cared for him, and walked beside him. He will be forever missed and always remembered. As Scripture reminds us: “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” (John 11:25)
