Paul J. Baltes passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 7 at his home.
Paul was a devout family man who always put those around him before himself. He was a self-starter, the first of his family to graduate from college, finishing all of his classes and even his student teaching, at night, while he worked full time during the day. A crafty handyman, Paul taught his children how to be self-sufficient. Paul gave tirelessly of himself, always helping those around him, whether they be stranger or friend. He could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was also an avid baseball fan and a walking encyclopedia of New York Yankees knowledge, keeping records of every player on every team roster. He would regale family members with complicated trades involving players from multiple teams. By profession he was an accountant and corporate comptroller for Modell’s, Tura Eyewear and a division of Konica; he felt that if he didn’t save the companies he worked for millions each week, he wasn’t doing his job. He loved to support local businesses and became friends with the owners.
He served his community by umpiring and refereeing many sports and serving as President of a local Uniondale softball league. He loved old movies, able to watch them over and over.
Paul is survived by his wife, 4 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 18 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents (George & Janice), his 2 brothers (William & Joseph), a daughter-in-law (Carrie) and a grandson (Nickolas).
