Ruben was born on January 30, 1942, in Macon County, Alabama, to Hercules, Sr. and Lelia Sims. He came from a large family where he was the fourth man of seven siblings. Ruben graduated from Tuskegee Institute High School in Tuskegee, AL, in 1960 and then attended culinary school. Subsequently, after high school, he moved up North to New York, where he worked for the United Parcels (UPS) for 30 years. Ruben started his career with UPS in Roslyn, NY, and retired from Uniondale, NY, in 1998. He met and married Dorothy Montgomery. Their union was blessed with the birth of four children Valerie, Karen, Darryl, and Veronica. In addition, Ruben was the very proud grandfather of Tatum and Saliyah. He loved on his granddaughters every chance he got. Ruben had a very, very vibrant personality. He had a great sense of humor, always trying to find the bright side of a bad situation. Everyone who knew him loved him. He enjoyed long walks, sitting in the park, and adventures at the casinos. In addition, he loved to garden— growing sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, peas, watermelon, and collard greens, to name a few items. He loved dancing, listening to music, and Adele's song "Someone Like You” was one of his favorites. He had a lot of energy to be 81 years old. He was a wonderful father and grandfather to Tatum and Saliyah. You would often find him speaking Spanish with his granddaughter Saliyah. He loved his family very much. Ruben enjoyed living his life. He always encouraged his family to do their best and enjoy life. A couple of his favorite sayings were “Mother Nature, Father Time” and “Father, give me a little more time." On April 5, 2023, the Lord called him home. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, daughter Veronica, son Darryl, parents Hercules, Sr., and Lelia Sims, and siblings Hercules, Jr., Helen, and Jacqueline. Cherishing his memory, Ruben leaves his legacy with daughters Karen Sims and Valerie; Valerie's husband Noel Griffith; granddaughters Tatum Sims and Saliyah Griffith; daughter in-law Monica; sisters Legusta and Delores; Betty and her husband William; Juanita and her husband George; and hosts of family and friends.
